After three long days of travel – yes, that includes travel time and layovers, what a pain – my husband and I finally made it to our new home, Olvera, Spain.
Olvera is located in the province of Cádiz in the autonomous community of Andalusia in Southern Spain. Olvera is the main town of the White Towns of Andalusia, or Pueblos Blancos, characterized by their whitewashed walls and red or brown tile roofs. The population is just over 8,000 inhabitants, which makes this town a charm to get away from the hustle and bustle of large cities.
There is no public transportation in the town, no taxis and certainly no Uber. There is a small bus station that has a few buses running to nearby towns and take you in to Málaga, Spain’s 6th largest city. The town is surrounded by olive groves and there are great views as you hike up to the Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación church. I’m loving this town! 🙂
As I walk down the streets, or while in supermarkets, I overhear people’s conversations and one of the phrases that I hear constantly is “Venga, Vale.” This phrase is used at the end of the conversation. The meaning? Venga is the equivalent to alright or come on and vale is “OK.”
Let me tell you about one of the most fascinating and interesting things about Olvera, the sun sets around 9:20pm – yes that’s right! I haven’t been in a place where the sun sets past 9pm, this is amazing. I’ve scouted beautiful locations from where I would love to capture sunset photos, can’t wait to work on those and share them with you.
Just found out that there will be a second annual Olive and Olive Oil Fair this weekend. Sounds fun, there will be live music, tastings and pairings, cooking contests and more!
Stay tuned as I discover more interesting places and things in this charming Spanish town of Olvera.
Beautiful town. Enjoy.
Thanks, Kurt!
