March 31, 2017 was a day that I was so looking forward to. Not only was it the end of the month, but it was the end of nearly 20 years of continuous work. Retirement? Not quite. My husband and I decided to pause our careers and travel long-term. It was time to take a break from years of work, work, work.

I remember friends, family and coworkers’ reactions when learning about our crazy plans. The majority supported our decisions and wished us happy and safe travels.

Traveling long term without having to worry about going back home in one week, or even worse, a few days, is a unique experience. However, there is a lot of time involved in doing your homework on the places you plan to visit. Sure, one can travel without any prior research or preparation, but preparing ahead of time is essential to ensure a better experience.

My new “full time job” not only was about taking photos of amazing places, but it also involved a great deal of research, translation of websites, learning languages, among other things. Who knew that traveling full time was also going to be exhausting.

Despite all the hard work that was involved, to this day, I can assure that being able to travel long term was an exciting chapter in my life. I have no regrets whatsoever and would do the same thing if the opportunity arose. Life is not all about work, but having fun as well. Sometimes the opportunity is right in front of us and it is up to us to discover it.
