Scrambling to find the right dock, we barely made it in time to catch the noon ferry for the island of Capri. In just a little over one hour we arrived and took a small yet crowded bus into Anacapri, a town located on the top of the western hills.
As the bus makes its way up through the winding and narrow streets, there are magnificent views of the island. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to see much since I was standing and holding on—the bus’ route had sharp turns.
After eating our grilled zucchini sandwiches we took for lunch at Piazza Vittoria, we headed to Villa San Michele. On our way, the walkways were nearly empty and many shops were closed. It was a real treat to enjoy the peaceful and charming paths, the architecture and the neat tile street signs. And best of all, almost no tourists to photobomb my pictures. I’m sure during summer hundreds of tourists flock the streets.
The Villa of San Michele is Dr. Axel Munthe’s former home, author of the renowned book of memoirs The Story of San Michele. As you set foot in the house, you begin in the dining room where you are greeted by a copy of a Pompeii mosaic of a skeleton holding a wine carafe and a water jug; implying that one should enjoy life as death is sneaking around the corner. The tour continues through the kitchen, inner courtyard, bedroom and studio—all of which are tastefully decorated.
Immediately outside the studio is the exquisitely decorated loggia, with sculptures and mosaics; followed by the enchanting colonnaded pergola path which leads to a scenic viewpoint guarded by a Sphinx. Lush gardens, a lovely chapel and stunning views complement the outside area.
Every corner of this villa is truly magical, I was mesmerized and still dream about this beautiful place on earth—the pearl of Capri.
