Perched on a steep cliff—with exceptional views—on the border between the Transylvania and Wallachia regions, this impressive medieval castle is associated with Bram Stoker’s celebrated novel, Dracula.

Situated in the town of Bran, 30 kilometers southeast from Brașov (pronounced brah-shov), the castle was built in the late 14th century in the former site of a fortress erected by the Teutonic Knights. It was on November 19, 1377 when Louis I of Anjou granted the Saxons of Kronstadt (today’s Brașov) the privilege of building a castle. In the mid-15th century the castle was used in defense against the Ottoman Empire’s expansion as well as a customs post.

Today, Bran Castle receives over half a million visitors each year, who can enjoy a collection of furniture and armor, narrow and winding staircases, rooms dedicated to Transylvania’s most famous Count as well as dazzling views from terraces and windows.
